Transfer to Negombo.
(Approx. 30 minutes’ drive from the airport to the hotel)
This fishing town is also well known for its nickname of “little Rome.” This region, which used to cultivate spices, was under the control of the Portuguese and Dutch. As a result, there is a strong Catholic presence in the region, as evidenced by the number of churches. The town is well known for its fresh and dry fish markets as well as its large sandy beaches where one can see traditional sailboats.

Negombo is one of Sri Lanka's largest towns, located on the west coast at the mouth of the Negombo lagoon. It ranks as the fifth-largest city in the country, following Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna, and Galle. The town is renowned for its expansive sandy beach, lush mangroves, and a charming array of restaurants and bars. With a population of approximately 128,000, Negombo serves as a vital commercial hub in Sri Lanka. Originally a fishing village, it is particularly famous for its fresh and dried fish markets. Influenced by both Portuguese and Dutch cultures, Negombo has a significant Roman Catholic presence, earning it the nickname “Little Rome.”

Located 150 km north of Colombo, the Kalpitiya region is one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the North-Western Province of Sri Lanka. Kalpitiya is a peninsula that separates the Puttalam Lagoon from the Indian Ocean, resulting in rich biodiversity. It features a protected marine sanctuary with coral reefs, salterns, mangroves, flat coastal plains, vast white sand beaches, and even a Dutch fort!
Kalpitiya has also gained a reputation as one of the best up-and-coming kite surfing destinations in the world. Additionally, it is popular for dolphin watching and is a short boat ride away from Wilpattu National Park.
Optional: Bird Watching Expedition at Anawilundawa Wildlife Sanctuary

Set out early in the morning (at 6:00 AM) for a guided birdwatching walk through the Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary, a remarkable man-made wetland dating back to the 12th century and located along the Western migratory bird flyway. Accompanied by an expert naturalist, you will explore this tranquil sanctuary, home to over 160 species of resident and migratory birds, including spoonbills, ibises, darters, bee-eaters, harriers, and owls. The diverse ecosystem also supports a variety of wildlife, including deer, civets, mongooses, wild boar, fruit bats, monitor lizards, and other reptiles and amphibians. Situated just 45 minutes from Bar Reef Resort, this immersive nature experience offers an excellent introduction to Sri Lanka's rich biodiversity.
Afternoon
Late afternoon, enjoy a reef-fishing excursion, followed by a demo by me and a meal prepared by the hotel chef with your freshly caught fish (seafood dinner included). Experience the thrill of reef fishing in the rich waters off Alankuda, accompanied by experienced local fishermen who will guide you to the best spots and share traditional fishing techniques. This relaxing excursion is suitable for both beginners and experienced anglers and includes hand lining only (no fishing rods will be provided), offering a chance to catch a variety of fish.
This experience is available from November to mid-April, subject to favourable conditions.

The Dambulla cave temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, was founded in the 1st century by King Valagamba. Ancient sculptures and paintings of the Buddha and various Hindu deities are located in five central caves. The original sculptures and paintings have been augmented over the centuries and stand as monuments to the evolving artistic styles of ancient Ceylonese artists.

A part of Aliya Resort & Spa’s sustainability objectives, the hotel recycles all of its paper consumption into crafts, products necessary for the hotel, as well as paper mâché elephants. Make your own paper, then paint the elephant in the style you wish.
Evening, spend the Night at a Pela (01 Hour excursion): Embark on a remarkable journey into the heart of farming life at a 'Pela.' As the sun dips below the horizon, accompany local farmers in safeguarding their precious harvest from the majestic yet wild elephants. Early morning, proceed to visit the Sigiriya Rock Palace (with packed breakfast). (We recommend you visit the site early in the morning, since it is less crowded & less hot.) The Sigiriya Rock Palace is a remarkable feat of engineering and a fascinating example of artistic craftsmanship. Hewn out of the living rock, the Sigiriya fortress was the stronghold of King Kashyapa, a formidable royal palace and city. Sigiriya, or the ‘Lion Rock ', is most famous for its frescoes; a series of “heavenly maidens” painted on the rock surface itself. From halfway up the rock, you can see the elaborately landscaped water gardens, which contain the royal baths and fountains, some of which still function during the rainy seasons. Sigiriya is a still-standing monument to Kashyapa, and the vision of a truly egotistical monarch.
Upon completion, visit the Dambulla Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable Market & pick your own vegetables for the cooking demonstration at Aliya Resort & Spa.

Enroute, visit the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa.
Polonnaruwa was established as the capital city after the fall of Anuradhapura and is known as the mediaeval capital of Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa contains the ruins of some of the masterpieces of Buddhist sculpture and remarkable feats of engineering that were well ahead of their time. Most outstanding amongst these is the Gal Vihara temple with its famous rock carvings of the Buddha and Parakrama Samudra, a vast man-made reservoir covering an area of over 23 kilometres.

The one thing in common with breakfast, lunch and dinner in Sri Lanka is that it’s all packed with spices! Spices have always been a famous and important export of Sri Lanka. Spices have been cultivated in such gardens over the years and have not only been used to aromatise food but also to make medicine and cosmetics. Visit our spice garden to learn about spices such as cinnamon, ginger, pepper, vanilla and cardamom, just to name a few.

Evening, visit the Temple of the Tooth along with a City Tour & late evening Kandy Bazaar Tour.
Sri Lanka's second largest city is Kandy, a beautiful historical city in the citadel of the country. It is not only known for its great kings who ruled the city for almost 225 years independently until the British took over in 1815, but it is also the place where the Sacred Tooth of Lord Buddha is laid in a magnificent temple. Known as the Temple of the Tooth, this temple houses the famous relic of Lord Buddha’s tooth and is without a doubt the city’s most important landmark. The temple holds daily ceremonies called Pujas (Thevava) every morning and night to honour the relic. Visitors get to see the Golden casing where the relic is kept during the ceremony, when the room's gates are opened. The ritualistic ceremony, which includes traditional drums, is a must for all those visiting the holy city of Kandy.

Enjoy a visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens: (entry fee for foreigners is approx £10)
The Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya was established in 1821 and now covers 140 acres, situated in a loop in the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka. Its primary purpose was the testing and acclimatising of plants for commercial use in Sri Lanka. Today the Gardens have one of the largest collections of flora from sub-tropical climates around the world.
LUNCH AT NILU’S KITCHEN
Janka and Nilu live in a village near Kandy and Nilu teaches cooking lessons at home and hosts lunches showcasing local dishes. They have been hosting lunches for my tours for the past 3 years, and this is one of the experiences the guests really enjoyed.
We will head back to the hotel post lunch.

En route, sight the Ramboda Falls from a scenic Viewpoint.
Upon arrival, enjoy a Tea Factory Visit.
Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka (1,868) and was designed to resemble a typical English village. Used as a retreat by British colonialists to remind them of home, the town is home to an 18-hole golf course, race course, and various buildings reminiscent of British country houses. With their brick facades, the post office and hill club are two Stirling examples of such architecture that transport you to the setting of an Agatha Christie mystery, with all the charm and cosiness of old England.
Sri Lankan tea, famously known as Ceylon Tea, is renowned worldwide for its rich flavour, aroma, and quality. A visit to a tea factory offers a fascinating insight into the tea-making process, from hand-plucking the finest leaves to withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying them to perfection. Guests can witness traditional and modern techniques in action and enjoy a fresh cup of Ceylon Tea while overlooking the breathtaking tea plantations.

Upon completion, proceed to the Nanu Oya Railway Station for a Scenic Train Ride from Nanu Oya to Ella.
This train ride is said to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The train hugs the cliffside as it winds across the mountains, offering up some stunning scenery that includes terraced paddy fields and plenty of tea plantations.

An evergreen forest that harbours one of Asia’s largest elephant populations, it is the ideal location to spot herds of these majestic pachyderms. In the Elephant Transit Centre located within the park, orphaned baby elephants are cared for and then released into the wild at the age of five. The park is also home to other animals like the jungle cat, sloth bear, porcupine, pangolin, macaque, langur, jackal, leopard, sambar deer, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, mongoose, bandicoot, flying squirrel, water buffalo, crocodile, and water monitor lizard. You can also spot a variety of birds including the endemic Sri Lankan spur fowl and jungle fowl.

Embark on a delightful journey across 1.5 acres of lush land, starting with a visit to a model gem mine that showcases the region's rich mining heritage. It is a sanctuary for orphaned baby elephants, where these young elephants are lovingly cared for and prepared for release back into the wild. Under the Foster Parent Scheme, our property, Waraka Udawalawe, supports the protection of a baby elephant named Amie, whose mother passed away from a liver infection. Witness the dedication of the staff as they nurture Amie and her companions, ensuring their survival and future freedom. Galle is the south coast’s major city, whose oldest landmark is the massive 17th-century Portuguese and Dutch Fort in which the central city is contained. This fort is perhaps the best example of colonial architecture in the country, and as you walk through the streets you can see strong Dutch influences in the architecture, along with some old British residences and various mosques with Arabic touches. Most of these old buildings have been restored to their former glory, with many being home to a vibrant culinary scene, with various hip restaurants and cafes. In addition, the city has a thriving art scene; you’ll find boutiques selling handicrafts, old posters, antiques, and home decor among other things.

Requirements to Travel to Sri Lanka
Please check with our team for updates as procedures may change.
• Visa - A visa needs to be obtained online (http://www.eta.gov.lk) before travelling to Sri Lanka at a cost of $50 USD. Visa on arrival is allowed, but we do not recommend it as it is time-consuming and is more expensive.
• COVID Restrictions – From the 7th of December 2022, there are NO more COVID restrictions to travel Sri Lanka.
General Notes
• All drive times are approximate and are subject to change based on traffic..
• All reservations and visits subject to availability at time of booking and Sri Lanka Health & Govt restrictions. • The standard check-in time in Sri Lanka is 1400 hours and the Checkout time is 11 am. Early check-ins & Late check-outs are subject to availability.
• On Poya (Full Moon Day) and other religious days, alcohol will not be served at hotels and restaurants. • Please note that the plucking of Tea leaves is not done on public holidays & Sundays. As such, the Tea production process does not take place; however, a tour of the factory will be arranged where the process is explained.
• We advise you to change your currency at the airport. A local SIM card can be purchased at the airport in Sri Lanka. I prefer to use Holafly or any other UK network Go Roam provider.
• When visiting religious sites such as Kandy Temple, Dambulla Temple, etc., your attire should cover your knees and shoulders. It is also advised to bring a pair of socks as you will be asked to remove slippers/shoes when entering sacred temples.
• Train Rides, tuk-tuks & other public transport will be subject to health guidelines at the time of travel.
• Train tickets are only open to purchase a few weeks before the date and are therefore subject to availability at the time of reservation.

• If cancelled 60 days prior to your arrival, a full refund will be made.
